More on Schukin: Sid Drell from SLAC called me, and said that Schukin's
intelligence had impressed him favorably, and, more concretely, if
Schukin had wanted to stay in theoretical physics, the physics dept.
would have given him an assistantship. (He had already been provisionally
 admitted).

September 12 is ok with me. Let me think a bit longer about the title.

∂22-JUL-74 0128 ESS,JMC
A Russian Jewish refugee trained in physics wants to enter as a graduate
student in CS. His name is Yefim Schukin, and I referred him to you.
I talked with him for about an hour and received a rather favorable
impression and favor considering admitting him in September as an
exception. It may be difficult to calibrate him though.

I have looked at meta.axm. It still seems very vague to me and far from
my immediate interest which is dynamics, i.e. axiomatizing the effects of
actions. It seems to me that people like Carnap, Kemeny, etc. (but
not them specifically) have tried to axiomatize stuff. If I think about
it, I will ask Suppes if he knows any references.
I will probably have more specific reactions later.

Please type memo to Bob Floyd suggesting that it would be nice
if we could settle emeritus status for Arthur Samuel by the
time he comes back on September 15. Perhaps department could
be polled by telephone. I am willing to prepare papers once
it is decided what has to be addressed to whom.

I would definitely like you to come to the Wednesday meeting.

∂19-JUL-74 1455 ESS,JMC
I would like to enlarge the interface between our lab and ARPA, and
therefore would like to bring several people to the 24 July meeting,
specifically Lester Earnest, Cordell Green, Tom Binford, and Lynn Quam.

Second matter: It would benefit the work here for Jerry Feldman
and Jim Low to use our computer via the ARPA net from Rochester until
at least September 1975 as they want to do. Jerry said I should send
you a message expressing this formally, and here it is.

I hope we will get a chance to discuss with someone control
of airplanes and other vision applications to defense problems. Quam
who will be coming, has done relevant work.

 					Best Regards,
 					John

The 360/67 has telephone lines that can recognize ASCII (i.e. decide
whether what they are getting is ASCII or EBCDIC), and the numbers are
328-4000 and 328-4111. Parker and I tried it but got gibberish and
probably timed out. Can you call someone there and see what has to be
done here or there to make dial work with them.

The mixed style of programming is entirely correct. Within a commitment to a
mixed style, there are matters of good taste, but I can't immediately put my finger
on what they are. The main functions should be described explicitly, but
for minor functions, less need be said culminating in merely saying "auxiliary
 function to <major function>".

 1. The purpose of hiring Michael Gordon is to bring MTC closer to previous
strength. It was discussed in our last meeting.

 2. The Jo Hannah case is not what it seems. She is not being given a
regular appointment, but one which is co-terminous with a grant Quam
got to determine whether his techniques will be useful for the Viking
mission for picking landing sites. Her work is directly applicable.
No funds that might be applicable to hand-eye work in general are
 involved.

I do not consider her as probably the strongest candidate in
a general hand-eye sense and would not hire someone for that without
consultation in any case. Even for the present purpose, there is some
question, but this is a zero cost trial, and I feel some incentive to
help out women who are not free to pursue jobs all over the country.
It has been made clear to her that we are not committed and beyond
this special contract from JPL is not highly probable.
 Do you still object?
